Purefresh Coffee Grinder - Tips and Maintenance
Since it has been about a month since I got my Purefresh Coffee Grinder. I decided to share some of my learnings on how to use and maintain this grinder.
Overall I'm quite happy with it since it is super easy to take apart and maintain. The instruction manual is well written in English and has large fonts for easy reading.
Taking it apart is quite easy as a quick reference (in case you misplaced the manual) this is the procedure I follow
- Unplug the Purefresh grinder from the wall socket
- Remove the plug from the back of the grinder to free up the motor
- Remove the top cover to expose the motor and hopper
- Twist the motor to the unlock position and remove and set aside in a dry area.
- Remove the receptacle / clear bin from the grinder
- PRO TIP: Twist the grind dial a few times and set it it to 17 in order to loosen the lower burr
- Twist the upper part of the grinder to the unlock position in order to separate the upper and lower parts of the grinder
- Lift the upper part of the grinder CAREFULLY. Ensure that the lower burr is not stuck to the upper burr. It has been known to get stuck to the upper burr due to coffee grinds, the danger of this is that it may suddenly fall out as you remove the upper part of the grinder.
- When the lower burr is exposed, set it aside on a mat or towel so it won't roll off
- Unscrew the ring holding the upper burr.
- Remove the upper burr and set it aside
- Now you can use your cleaning tools to clean the grinder
Here are some oterh tips I can give Purefresh owners
1) Buy a cleaning brush. I got mine from Lazada for about PHP300. Makes it easy to brush off the remaining grinds
2) Do not take a Purefresh apart while you are standing up. Make sure you're sitting down in front of a table preferably with a mat. This is to ensure that in case you drop the ceramic burrs (yes... it happend to me) there is minimal impact and damage to the burrs.
3) After grinding a batch of coffee, to help clear the burrs, I usually loosen the burrs to the widest setting (17) and let it run for 2-3 seconds in order to get any small grinds out to the container. This helps reduce the grind retention.
4) If you continue to hear funny grinding sounds after grinding coffee beans, STOP. It is best to just take the motor out and open up the grinder in order to check if anything hard is stuck on the burr. I found a particularly big particle that the grinder was having difficulty grinding
5) Don't overwork the motor. The motor has good torque and is able to ensure a consistent grind. But I make it a point to smell my motor after every use to see if it is burned out. So far 3-5 min of grinding seems to be ok with it.
